What's Hot

  • Much cheaper than any of the stylish yet very expensive island lodges offshore - why not use Bahia Mar as your stylish base and use some of the money saved to go out on day trips to explore the archipelago instead?
  • Fantastic views out over the Bazaruto Archipelago with its string of islands scattered like loose pearls over the brilliantly blue hued ocean
  • We love the stunning infinity pool with attached swim-up bar and lounging area - we wouldn't blame you if you spent most of your holiday right here!
  • Very attractive and well equipped rooms with their gorgeous contemporary design flair are some of the finest accommodation available in mainland Vilanculos
  • Loads of activities on offer - from boat and dhow trips out to the islands, snorkelling and scuba diving, deep-sea fishing to kite-boarding; back at the lodge enjoy yoga sessions or workout in the superbly equipped gym (or follow our example and head for a massage in the Spa!)
  • Laze about in the attractive lounge area which adjoins the restaurant under its soaring thatch roof

What's Not

  • The beach below the lodge is not isolated and pristine like those out on the islands
  • With the rooms being grouped together in units of 3 (2 upstairs and a larger room below) you don't enjoy the privacy and seclusion offered by lodges with completely standalone rooms
Bahia Mar

Bahia Maras you emerge onto the deck what greets you is a quite simply stunning view out over the azure waters and scattered islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago!

Vilanculos on mainland Mozambique is the springboard to the fabulous islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, which boast an array of superb beach lodges – the only problem is that the prices of these island lodges are equally fabulous, taking them out of reach of all but the very well heeled! The Bahia Mar presents a handy solution to those folk looking to explore the archipelago and wanting somewhere stylish to stay, whilst unfortunately not having the budget to afford the very expensive lodges on the islands. It is the most stylish affordable accommodation in Vilanculos by far, and makes the perfect base from which you can explore the scenic beauty of the archipelago.

Driving through the dusty streets of Vilanculos gives you little idea of the gorgeous little oasis that you encounter as you drive through the gates of Bahia Mar. As you emerge onto the deck what greets you is a quite simply stunning view out over the azure waters and scattered islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. The superbly attractive infinity pool deck in particular is a quite stunning spot to simply sit back and drink in the views on offer – and why not enjoy a fresh fruit smoothie or delicious cocktail at the same time!

As mentioned previously the rooms at Bahia Mar get our vote as the most stylish in Vilanculos – and you can mix and match according to the size of your party of travellers. The accommodation consists of little "2 up and 1 down" blocks with each offering 2 separate top floor suites (called Sea View Bedrooms) boasting fantastic views and which are a great choice for couples. Downstairs you’ll find more spacious units (called Beach Luxury Suites) which offer a gorgeous plunge pool and hugely spacious lounge area. And if you’re a family needing extra space, then – hey presto – you can combine the 3 units and enjoy a superb duplex Family Unit (consisting of 2 Sea Views above with the Beach Luxury Suite below) This then offers space aplenty as well as your own pool for the whole family to enjoy! Whichever room you end up in, the interiors are wonderfully stylish and well equipped in a contemporary yet natural style that we found irresistibly attractive!

As well as beautiful indigenous gardens, Bahia Mar also boasts delightful coconut curtained spa rooms where you can enjoy a relaxing massage – or if you’re more of the active type you can keep yourself toned in the very well appointed gym.

It’s probably fair to say that the beach below the lodge isn’t the most attractive and pristine which is understandable given that it is in the town, so our advice whilst at the lodge itself is to enjoy swimming in the sensational swimming pool whilst looking out over the islands; you can then splash out some of the considerable money saved by staying here on excursions out into the islands by boat – either speedy ski-boat or perhaps an atmospheric trip by traditional dhow! Diving, wake boarding and kitesurfing are just a few of the exciting activities you can enjoy using Bahia Mar as your handy base.

Back at the lodge the good news is that the dining experience is excellent, whether you’re enjoying your fresh seafood whilst soaking up the stunning sea views seated out on the deck, or tucked cosily away under the attractive thatched roof of the restaurant area (and remember to keep an eye out for the genet that we saw climbing high along the roof beams above us whilst we were staying here and which is apparently a regular visitor!)
